USC is canceling tonight’s debate in the race for California governor. It comes after the university faced backlash for excluding every candidate of color from the debate. In a statement released less than 24 hours before the debate was supposed to begin, USC acknowledges “concerns about the selection criteria,” admitting they “have created a significant distraction from the issues that matter to voters.” USC and debate co-sponsor KABC-TV were not able to reach an agreement on expanding the number of candidates at the debate. Last week, a prominent attorney sent a letter on behalf of former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, demanding his exclusion from the debate be revisited and corrected.
