Two California lawmakers overseeing the new billion-dollar Capitol Annex project are facing criticism for a lack of transparency and continued refusal to turn over documents detailing the costs.
On Wednesday, State Senator John Laird, who oversees the Senate’s Budget Committee, failed to deliver a promised cost update ahead of the Legislature’s spring recess and refused to speak with KCRA.
According to KCRA, “Project leaders, Democratic Assemblymember Blanca Pacheco and State Senator John Laird, refused repeated interview requests over the course of three months and would not provide any information before lawmakers break for the legislature’s spring recess that begins on Thursday. This, despite assurances they made in December that they would provide a cost update in ‘early 2026.'”
