A shooting disrupted the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Saturday night at the Washington Hilton, prompting a fast security response and the evacuation of President Donald Trump and other senior officials. Authorities said the president was not injured, and the suspect was taken into custody near the event’s security screening area.
Law enforcement officials said one officer was struck in a bullet-resistant vest and was expected to recover. The suspect, identified as a 31-year-old man from California, was reportedly armed with multiple weapons. Investigators said they believe he acted alone, though the motive remained under review.
The incident caused panic inside the venue as attendees took cover and security officers moved quickly through the ballroom. The dinner, which brings together journalists, public officials, and guests each year, was stopped after the shooting.
Trump, the first lady, the vice president, and Cabinet members were safely moved from the scene. The event is expected to be rescheduled after security officials complete their review of what happened.
