The city of Los Angeles has unveiled a new dashboard highlighting its Top 100 Problem Rental Properties. City Controller Kenneth Mejia says the online tool is designed to pressure landlords to obey housing laws while also pushing city officials to crack down on repeat offenders. Since 2013, tenants have submitted more than 115,000 complaints to the Los Angeles Housing Department. The dashboard includes a searchable database that allows residents to look up violations tied to specific addresses. It also features a map identifying more than 44,000 rental properties with complaints on record. According to the data, renters have reported more than 55,000 illegal evictions, nearly 39,000 unlawful rent increases, more than 32,000 complaints involving reduced services and over 24,000 harassment cases. Hillside Villa Apartments in Chinatown recorded the highest number of violations, with nearly 200 reported cases overall, according to the city database. Officials hope the database improves accountability in rental housing.
