A Fourth of July celebration in Newport Beach turned chaotic as hundreds of people were arrested after crowds rampaged through the city. Residents Gina and Joshua James Burciaga described watching the unrest unfold from their beachfront home. Police called the incident a “TikTok takeover,” saying large groups of older teenagers and young adults gathered to party, fight, and create disturbances along the beach. After officers cleared the sand, the crowds spilled into nearby streets before converging in the parking lot of a Pavilions grocery store. Authorities say the group vandalized the area and threw fireworks at responding officers. One officer was struck by a mortar-style firework but is expected to recover. More than 40 people were transported to local hospitals with various injuries. By the end of the night, police reported making 402 arrests. Investigators are reviewing video and social media posts as they continue identifying others who may have been involved.
