Rent prices in San Francisco have climbed to record-breaking levels, according to a new report from online rental marketplace Zumper. The report found the median monthly rent for a one-bedroom apartment reached an all-time high of $4,060 last month, marking a 22 percent increase compared with the same time a year ago. Researchers say that is the largest year-over-year jump recorded in any major U.S. city. The cost of a two-bedroom apartment has also surged, with the median monthly rent now reaching $5,700. Housing analysts believe the region’s booming artificial intelligence industry is a major factor driving the sharp increase, as companies continue hiring and attracting high-paid workers to the Bay Area. The growing demand for housing, combined with limited apartment availability, has intensified competition for rentals. The rising costs are adding to affordability concerns for many residents already struggling with the region’s high cost of living overall.
