The California Department of Motor Vehicles says suspected cheating is the reason nearly 11,000 drivers must retake their written licensing exams. In a new statement, the DMV said the invalid test results were caused by “test taker-related irregularities,” adding they were not the result of an internal technical problem or the use of artificial intelligence. Officials had previously declined to explain why the exams were being voided. Last month, the agency notified affected drivers that they must retake and pass the written test within 30 days or risk having their driver’s licenses revoked. The DMV says the issue came to light through routine internal monitoring, which uncovered what it described as various cheating methods. The agency has not specified how the cheating occurred or how many tests were affected by each method. A DMV spokesperson also confirmed that an undisclosed number of cases have been referred to local district attorneys for possible criminal prosecution.
