The Port of Long Beach has signed an agreement to develop small offshore nuclear reactors, potentially marking California’s first new nuclear power project in nearly 50 years. The small modular reactors, or SMRs, would generate electricity for the Port of Long Beach and the ships that operate there. The technology is being developed by startup Bluecore Energy, which launched less than a year ago. The compact reactors are designed to operate on floating barges, providing a potential new source of power for the busy Southern California trade hub. Last month, the port signed a cooperation agreement with the Federal Maritime Administration to help develop safety standards for the emerging technology. The port has also leased space at Berth 48 to Bluecore Energy, where the company is developing and testing its reactor design. Officials say the project could eventually help reduce emissions from port operations while providing reliable electricity for ships and other facilities. The project remains in the development and testing stage.
