Meta Settles Social Media Addiction Lawsuit

Meta is settling a federal trial over allegations that its social media platforms contributed to addiction among young users. Several states sued the technology company, accusing it of deliberately designing platforms including Facebook and WhatsApp to keep children engaged and potentially dependent on the services. The states also alleged Meta misled users about the safety of its apps and their potential effects on children. As part of the settlement, Meta denied the allegations but agreed to make changes aimed at protecting teenage users. The company committed to establishing daily usage limits and blocking nighttime access for some teenage users, along with implementing enhanced age-verification measures. Meta will also pay nearly $17 billion as part of the settlement, according to the terms announced in the case.
