Los Angeles County is investigating how Farmers Insurance handled wildfire claims following last year’s devastating Palisades and Eaton fires. The investigation comes after policyholders complained about delays, claim denials and underpayments. County lawyers sent a letter to Farmers this week, warning the company that if it is engaging in any unlawful or unfair business practices, it needs to immediately stop. L.A. County Supervisor Kathryn Barger, who represents Altadena, says Farmers left Eaton Fire survivors “with a contaminated home” and refused to pay for testing and cleanup. Barger says the insurance company will not cover testing that shows some homes contain lead, asbestos and other dangerous chemicals resulting from smoke damage. Farmers is disputing the county’s claims and has not agreed with the allegations. County officials say they are reviewing the company’s practices and how claims from wildfire survivors have been handled. The investigation remains ongoing as homeowners continue seeking help with recovery and repairs.
