News Helicopter Crashes While Covering Deadly Accident

The National Transportation Safety Board will lead the investigation into the crash of a Los Angeles news helicopter that went down while covering a fatal accident yesterday evening. Los Angeles Fire Captain Branden Silverman says the helicopter was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived at the scene. The chopper was providing news coverage for KNBC and sister station Telemundo 52 when it crashed between two commercial buildings in Chatsworth. The crash killed the pilot, a reporter and a person on the ground. Before going down, the helicopter’s occupants were reporting on a collision involving an SUV and a Metro bus. That crash killed three people and injured several others. Investigators will examine the helicopter, flight path, weather conditions and other factors as they work to determine what caused the crash. The NTSB is expected to gather evidence from the scene and interview witnesses as part of the investigation.
