Southern California could see the peak of unusually high king tides today, with another surge expected just before 10 a.m. local time. The tides have already caused flooding in several coastal communities, including Long Beach’s Alamitos Peninsula and Newport Beach’s Balboa Peninsula. On Monday, the tide in Newport Beach reached 8.3 feet, about two feet higher than predicted. Several businesses flooded after water breached makeshift sandbag barriers. In San Pedro, the high tide rose above eight feet, breaking a record that had stood since 2005. That record could be broken again today as the unusually high tides continue. A coastal flood warning remains in effect until 1 p.m. Thursday. Officials warn that coastal flooding could cause property damage, while continued high water may worsen beach erosion. Residents in vulnerable coastal areas are urged to remain alert, monitor local conditions and take precautions as the region braces for another round of potentially damaging high tides.
