The City of West Hollywood is shutting the door to future campaign stops by Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump. West Hollywood Mayor Lindsey Horvath says she sent a letter to that effect.
“Their tactics, their violence, their hate speech is something that is not part of the community that we’re creating in West Hollywood. I was calling out their behavior. I shared that letter with my colleagues in other cities in Los Angeles (County). West Hollywood is a very diverse community, where that kind of language, that kind of behavior really targets communities in our city. We’re over 40 percent LGBT. We have Russian-speaking immigrants, some of whom are Holocaust survivors These are communities that first-hand understand the impacts of hate speech and words that incite violence.”
Horvath says everyone is free to share their opinions within the City. She regards the letter not as a challenge, but as a call for Trump to be mindful of the kinds language, hate speech and violence that she feels his words encourage.
“We want to be a safe haven for people, we want to be a safe place for people,” said Horvath.
She says hasn’t heard directly from his campaign but she has heard back from his supporters.
“They have threatened to gut me like a fish, used racial epithets and homophobic slurs that target communities in my city. They’ve sent me videos of dead fetuses – I mean this is really disgusting behavior.”
Horvath was a guest on 790 KABC’s McIntyre in the Morning Show with Doug McInyre and Terri-Rae Elmer.
