Members of a Congressional panel are expressing worries that there is not enough money to build California’s high-speed rail between San Francisco and Los Angeles. California Republican Representative Doug Lamalfa said at a hearing in San Francisco yesterday that proceeds from a state environment program that is supposed to help pay for the $64 billion project were far below expectations, and so far there’s no private funding.
“It seems odd,” said Dan Richard, chairman of the state’s rail authority, “to be stopping in the middle of an almond orchard.”
The first stretch of the line running from Central Valley to Silicon Valley is currently under construction.
