Los Angeles is the most dangerous city in the U.S. when it comes to getting around by bicycle. That’s according to a new report published on Yourlocalsecurity.com.
That statistic appears to back up what Jay Beeber with SaferStreetsLA.com has been saying all along: Vision Zero – L.A.’s program to reduce pedestrian traffic fatalities – is a flop.
“The problem with Vision Zero is that it’s not real science. It’s not a real safety program. It’s an ideology program. It’s a program of ‘We want to get people out of their cars. We want to change the way people live their lives.’ ”
He says our streets are generally safer for pedestrians than they were in the 1960s, so the idea that there is a crisis is really just hype.
Plus, when pedestrians are struck, the odds are it’s their own fault.
“Over 50 percent of fatal pedestrian collisions are caused by pedestrians – by jay-walking or things they shouldn’t be doing. And if you take that number and break it down, over 50 percent of that number occur while a pedestrian is impaired on drugs or alcohol, mostly alcohol.”
