New L.A. homeless shelter construction runs over budget

A new homeless shelter set to open next month in L.A.’s historic El Pueblo has run into cost overruns.

The “Los Angeles Times” reports “expedited construction” helped boost the cost of the 7,000-square-foot deck to $700,000, said Mayor Garcetti spokeswoman Anna Bahr. The triangular shape of the shelter’s site — a city-owned parking lot — also made building the deck more costly, she said.

Garcetti has committed at least $20 million for more trailers, tents and other temporary shelters across the city.
