Sellfies drive plastic surgery boom

Selfies posted on social media are inspiring a rush to the plastic surgeon.

Health expert Dr. Daliah says the deal is people change their faces with photo retouching apps to attract more admirers on social media, but face problems when they meet a date in the flesh.

“I think that people are putting a filtered, doctored-up selfie on their dating page, then, when they meet the person for their blind date, they get rejected. So they go, ‘Whoa, whoa, whoa? I need to look then like my picture!’ ”

Dr. Drew, host of 790 KABC Mid-Day Live with Dr. Drew and Lauren Sivan, says the preoccupation by some with their social media photo is troublesome.

“It’s sort of narcissism squared. It’s narcissistic disconnect from the person into the image itself and the image is then manipulated and that becomes the reality. The manipulated image becomes not just the desired reality, it becomes the reality that our body must comply with. And, yes, people are going to plastic surgeons and asking to have their ribs taken out, their waists narrowed, their eyes widened.”

Dr. Daliah and Dr. Drew were guests on McIntyre in the Morning.
