L.A. councilman faces sex harassment allegations but oversight process may be seen as ‘tainted’

Los Angeles City Councilman Jose Huisar is facing an investigation by a personnel department special committee over complaints of harassment, discrimination and retaliation.

Los Angeles Times City Hall reporter David Zanheiser says Huizar’s predicament stems from Mayor Eric Garcetti’s decision to put up a web site where employees could lodge complaints about sexual harassment in the workplace.

“He set up a web site called ‘My Voice L.A.’ and it was in beta or testing form for several months.  And over the course of that testing period the city did get at least one significant complaint. It was filed against Councilman Jose Huizar.”

So how far is this likely to go? Zanheiser says the special committee was ordered convened by Council President Herb Wesson, an ally of Huizar’s.

“He endorsed him in the last election. He endorsed him in 2015 and had very effusive things to say. That’s why the last time there was this kind of committee, the person who had been making the allegation, she refused to be interviewed. Through her lawyer, she basically said it was a tainted process, given that the council would ultimately be the arbiter.”

Council members won’t conduct the investigation, but will evaluate the completed report.
