Confidence in politicians at 10-year high, poll finds

A new Gallup Poll shows that Americans’ confidence in their politicians is at a ten-year high.

Fifty-five percent of Americans said in early September that they have a “great deal” or “fair amount” of confidence in politicians.  That is up seven percentage points from a year ago and 13 points from the record low of 42% in September 2016.

Gallup’s Editor-in-Chief Frank Newport says it’s Republicans who are driving the up the approval ratings.

”We’ve seen a distinct, significant uptick in the number of Republicans nationally who say they have a great deal of confidence, or a fair amount of confidence in the men and women in political life in this country.”

He cautions against predictions that the Democrats will take control of the House of Representatives in the midterm elections.

”The idea that the Democrats are just going to have a big wave is, I think, premature. We’ll see what happens.”

Frank Newport was a guest on McIntyre in the Morning.
