Supreme Court Again Upholds Obamacare–But Not On Merits

(Washington, DC) — The Supreme Court is again upholding the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare. The decision was 7-2. Justices said Republican-led states did not have the legal standing to bring the case. The high court did not rule on the merits of the landmark healthcare law. Republicans have tried to shoot down Obamacare for years. Defendants warned that up to 20-million Americans could lose their health insurance if the healthcare law was struck down, along with protections for those with pre-existing conditions.

The heart of the case involved whether the entire law could stand once the individual mandate was eliminated, effective in 2019. A Republican-led Congress removed the individual mandate in a sweeping tax bill. It was a key component of the original law, penalizing people who did not sign up for healthcare.
